| Born Sept 10, 1962 Anchorage, Alaska My earliest musical memories are of sitting on my Dad’s shoulders for the encore at a Louis Armstrong concert when I was 2 and of riding my tricycle listening to “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” on one of those little transistor radios with a strap, hanging off the handle bars. My mother was an artist and cartographer. She taught me that music was the master art because all other art forms go to it for inspiration. There was always music playing. 78’s of swing – Big Band and Texas - Kingston Trio, Ray Charles, vocal groups, Broadway soundtracks – everything. I began playing drums at age eight, studying music at Lane Tech and The American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. In 1975 I started playing in the Chicago Historical Society’s Drum and Fife Corps for the Bi-Centennial. In high school I played in garage bands – stuff like Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin…I started messing around with the bass. My band mates said I couldn’t play two instruments – naturally I concentrated harder. I’ve also picked up guitar, mandolin, 6 string banjo, and lap steel. I sing and compose. I have played all kinds of music with all kinds of bands, including: Subway, Word Bongo (which was well received in Chicago and a favorite on WXRT’s “Local Anesthetic” show), and Jack Salamander He has always worked with his own groups on “his music” including: Mambo Jambo (where Nancy Walker and Sue Demel of “Sons of the Never Wrong” first met), Transients Welcome with Chicago Cy, Cowcatcher, and his current project, “Chuck’s Wagon”. |
